H&L’s vision has always been to use technology to improve outcomes for all. Following this vision, we have been studying the existing, population-scale technologies that have been built by the Indian government to examine where and how H&L can leverage it to add value in Education field.
Over the last decade, India has developed a robust digital infrastructure. It started with the Aadhar project (a digital unique ID for all Indian citizens), followed by the establishment of the eKYC and UPI frameworks. The technologies used in building these are popularly known as the India Stack(https://indiastack.org/index.html). The India Stack has two major components: a unique identifier for each citizen (Aadhaar) and a digital payment infrastructure (built by the National Payments Corporation of India), with the UPI making financial inclusion possible for millions of Indians.
Along similar lines, the Indian government has launched NDEAR to make a meaningful impact in the education sector. NDEAR refers to the ‘National Digital Education Architecture’ plan is a key enabler of the National Education Policy (NEP - 2020).
NDEAR is not a platform or solution but rather a architectural blueprint for the educational ecosystem in the country, defining a set of principles, specifications, guidelines and policies to strengthen the digital infrastructure for education. More details are available at :
There are several important projects which are a part of NDEAR like the Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (DIKSHA) and Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VKS) platforms as well as School, Teacher, and Student Registries. https://www.ndear.gov.in/all-projects.html.
Overall, this is a large ecosystem that H&L plans to research during the following months, with special emphasis on understanding the ground realities of this system via interactions with government schools. Stay tuned for more updates on this project!
