Gender inequality in education is a hard fact. According to 2011 census data on India's childhood literacy rates, 82% of the boys are literate and only 65% of the girls could read and write.
The reason for this are poverty, illiteracy, social customs, anti-female attitude and the dismal infrastructure in many government schools. In India, especially in the rural areas Girls' education is not considered as important and they are forced to drop out of school to take care of the household. In some cases. girls are even are married off much before they reach the legal marriageable age of 18 years. These reasons and also the 2011 census show that gender discrimination is still prevalent in society.
There are many NGOs like Nanhi kali, Milaan foundation working on minimising the gender inequality and empowering women. Government of India also runs a Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. Statistics show that there is a steady increase in enrolment of girls in secondary school over the years. We at H&L believe that education for a girl child not only help individually but helps the community in general and also the economy. We are striving to help girls get equal opportunities as boys.
